Do you know Chip? If you don't, you should. And you should really know his work. Chip has been taking pictures for over 40 years. (Hard to believe right? I mean look at him, he must have been taking pictures from birth! - he drinks from the fountain of youth! - although we are still awaiting confirmation of that....) And Chip is one of our two prestigious judges for The App Wars Competition.
Chip is an innovative and an amazing talent in the industry and has been described as an "influential oddity" in the world of photography. A style pioneer in his unconventional uses of wide-angle lenses and pop, arty, colored strobes, his work these days runs the gamut from editorial and advertising assignments to his much loved dog series to his surreal backyard portraits of masked figures, to music or anything else that would have the call of excellence mixed with unique vision unparalleled to what you could find anywhere else. Chip is known for his comedy, irony, satire and wit. And you can see it in his art.
Chip was born in Ohio in 1958 and was introduced to photography while in high school in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Following studies in art and photography at Kutztown University and at the University of New Mexico, Chip moved to New York City and received his first commercial assignments. His first series of work, "I Am a Dog," was initially published in Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine.
Subsequent publications showing Chip's photos included the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Time, Newsweek, Fortune, New York Magazine, and others. Chips has also shot for Esquire, US, Men's Journal, American Airlines, graced the cover of many magazines including TIME and a plethora of others.
In the mid 1980's, Chip had emerged as an important photographer with a unique way of seeing, coupled with a vivid color and innovative lighting techniques. His wide-angle lens photos were used by many companies to bring a quirky, humorous feel to their ad campaigns.
Clients as diverse as Shimano Bicycles, the U.S. Postal Service and Seagrams have used Chip's work in their campaigns. A true artist with a prolific repertory of ideas, his images never cease to push his equipment and his vision to the edge.
AND....he's judging the App Wars. And we are excited to see what images are going to strike his attention. Aren't you? We love his work. We drool over it. And we are so excited and honored to have him and his expertise in this competition. (Sigh...) We love Chip. We know you will too.
